My first thought when Apple announced they were releasing wireless charging with iPhone 12 was I’d comfortably lie on a sofa, with a charger connected to an electric outlet and my iPhone will charge using some form of electromagnetic wave. However, my thought didn’t exactly come to pass, but Apple provided wireless charging, at least you don’t have to worry about power USB cords anymore.
Wireless charging apart from being easier and more comfortable to use is also twice as powerful as a normal USB adapter. It can charge up to the rate of 7.5 Watts and that’s a true definition of fast charging.
How To Turn On Wireless Charging?
At the core of the concept of wireless charging is easier usage. There’s not much you need to do before you get started with charging wirelessly. To turn wireless charging on your iPhone 12 I’ll be showing you two ways to do this, follow the below instructions;
- Open iPhone settings
- Open general
- Tap to open accessibility
- Scroll down to find wireless charging
- Toggle the button to on
The second way to turn on wireless charging I believe is easier than the first, but I think you should know both ways. Here’s how;
- Open the control center
- Do this by swiping up from the screen’s bottom
- You’ll find the wireless charging icon
- Tap on it to enable charging.
After you would have completed this process, proceed to use your wireless charger. Here’s how to start charging with your wireless charger;
- Plug the accessory (wireless charger) into a power outlet
- Place the charging mat on a surface level
- Place your iPhone 12 on it
- Ensure that your screen is facing up and the back bearing the Apple logo faces the charger directly
- Ensure also that your iPhone is placed at the center for optimum results. The placement could be different for many manufacturers, you can always find out by reading the manual guide.
Why Is My Wireless Charging Not Working On iPhone 12?
If you use iPhone 12 and have noticed that wireless charging wouldn’t work on your device no matter how hard you try, I feel sorry for your situation. You’re not the only one who has experienced this. Some users have complained that wireless charging will work only a while and then stop to never work again.
This is particularly frustrating, especially when you remember you paid a fortune for the accessory. I’ve put together for you why this may be happening and most importantly, how to resolve the issue and start charging your iPhone 12 wirelessly again. Here are some of the whys;
1. Outdated iOS Version
If your iPhone is running on an outdated version, then you may encounter difficulties with wireless charging. Apple will always release new features based on recent IOS upgrades. These upgrades will feature important software and fixes that will regulate how your phone interacts with the charging mat to bring about wireless charging.
This is the first troubleshooting step you may want to start from to fix the issue. To update your iPhone 12, do the following;
- Head onto settings
- Tap on general
- Select software update
- It’ll scan for available updates
- Tap on download and install afterward
2. An Obstructive Casing
Wireless charging wouldn’t have been made possible if not for the technology of magnetic induction, this is what is utilized to make your iPhone charge without a power cord. If you remember anything from elementary physics, inductive interaction will imply that a good contact must be made between your device and the charging accessory to work.
That said, a bulky phone casing may prevent this contact and will stop your iPhone 12 from wireless charging.
An easy way to solve this would include;
- Remove your iPhone casing during charge times
- Get a better fitted better-fitted casing. Bogus ones are usually the problem.
3. Improper Placement
The placement of your device on the wireless charger matters. Not every surface on the charging mat will work as the manufacturers have carved out hotspot regions where the magnetic inductive charge is concentrated, which is usually towards the center of the charging mat for most manufacturers.
This is why Apple’s choice Qi – certified-certified charger is the MagSafe charger. The MagSafe charging mat helps you find the placement region by use of magnets connected to it. This also helps lock the device in place in the case of any vibration that will push away the iPhone from the hotspot region.
If you’ve been placing your iPhone 12 on the mat wrongly, the best place to turn to for guidance is the manual guide that comes with the accessory.
To ensure also that your device is always locked in position when charging, do the below;
- Turn on silent mode to prevent vibrations
- Activate DND mode.
4. USB Is Connected
Wireless charging does not stop you from charging with a normal USB power cord and adapter. However, the both cannot be used at the same time. If you’ve placed your iPhone on the charging mat, while still having a USB connection to the lightning port, the Software will just rule off wireless charging, but the phone will continue to charge via USB.
5. Normal Temperature Range Exceeded
iPhone is super mindful of the temperature. Neither a too cold nor a very hot temperature will work but an optimum temperature range which is anywhere from room temperature to a few degrees up. Although iPhone getting warmer is normal, a higher temperature will immediately trigger some software which will that stop the device from charging anymore even while on the charging mat. Here’s what you can do if this is the case;
- Disconnect the wireless charger from the charging outlet and allow it to rest for a while.
- Make sure iPhone is well ventilated, you can even remove the casing to aid the process.
- You can try to use the wireless charger again when the temperature drops.
6. Inferior Wireless Charger
Qi certified-certified chargers are all over the place. While Apple does not insist you use their wireless charger product, make sure that whichever product you choose is of quality. Quality Qi-chargers will not exceed a certain range of voltage usually not above 12 volts. Your iPhone will cut off chargingits from an accessory that exceeds or lowers it’s voltage and power specifications. Here’s what you can do;
- To be safe and enjoy optimum charging, my advice will be to get the Apple MagSafe wireless charging accessory. It’ll cost a few bucks but will not fail you.

7. Dirt Layer On Wireless Charger
Like most other accessories, dirt and grime on the surface of the mat can reduce or stop completely its functionality. Remember your iPhone needs to make perfect contact with the charger to function effectively and anything that bridges that will need to be removed. While this may rarely happen, to be on the safe side, Here’s what you can do;
- Wipe out the surface of the charging mat.
- Use a damp paper towel or damp linen
- Leave the mat to dry before using it again
Can I Turn Off Wireless Charging On iPhone 12?
